AB

I participated in the HBR online addition program at the end of 2023. I am grateful to say I have been sober for 14 months. This is the longest period of sobriety I have experienced in over a decade of trying many programs, pills and plans!

The support, encouragement, cheerleading and wisdom from Michael and the HBR program has been instrumental in my success to date. This was the first time I did a one on one program which really fit my needs at the time. The other programs I tried in the past were group focused with a small portion one on one. I had success for short periods of time but the intensive one on one was my game changer.

I found the encouraging non judgmental support from Michael allowed me to dig deep and express my feelings. I am 60 so that is a lot of digging!!

I am grateful that I allowed myself to seek help and bravely work hard.

I am grateful HBR was there to stand by me and guide my journey!

Thank you so so much.

online therapy does it really work.

Are Virtual Drug Programs Effective?

Yes. Virtual treatment has proven to be effective and accessible for many people seeking help with drug use. For those who cannot attend in-person rehab or prefer privacy and flexibility, online care can offer comparable outcomes with fewer barriers.

  • Online intensive outpatient care can achieve similar reductions in substance use and improvements in wellbeing compared with in‑person services for many clients.
  • Telehealth increases access and privacy, reducing barriers like travel, stigma, waitlists, and work or childcare disruptions.
  • Consistent contact with trained specialists (coaches, therapists, prescribers) is a key driver of outcomes.
  • Regular check‑ins and structured support help sustain change.
  • Integrated care that addresses both substance use and mental health (e.g., anxiety, depression, trauma) improves engagement and recovery durability.
  • Many clients report better self‑management of cravings, improved routines and sleep, and stronger coping skills.

HBR is not a quick fix. It is modern, evidence‑based support delivered online, meeting you where you are and helping you make practical, sustainable changes.

What is Drug Addiction?

Drug addiction, also called substance use disorder (SUD), is when drug use continues despite harm and starts to take over key parts of life.

Addiction can affect health, mood, relationships, work or school, and your sense of control. Addiction is more complicated than lacking willpower or making a bad choice: it develops through a mix of biology, mental health, environment, and the effects of the substance itself.

drug use can develop in small steps.

How Does Drug Addiction Develop?

Just like alcohol, drug addiction can affect anyone, and for a multitude of reasons. Addiction may develop from occasional recreational use or from legitimate, prescribed medical use. Next, as our tolerance builds, doses or frequency increases so we get the same effect (or to avoid feeling unwell).

As drug use becomes a pattern, it is used to cope with stress, sleep, pain, or emotions. Control slips away, and cutting back feels harder and harder as more time is spent getting, using, or recovering.

Common Signs of Drug Addiction

Addiction can involve opioids, stimulants, sedatives, cannabis, prescription medications, and others, and the signs between drugs may vary. However, there are common signs of drug addiction:

  • Cravings and thinking about using more than you want to
  • Needing more to feel the same effect (tolerance)
  • Withdrawal symptoms when stopping or reducing
  • Missed responsibilities or declining performance
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, mood, or energy
  • Strained relationships, secrecy, or financial stress
  • Using in risky situations or continuing despite health or legal consequences

With structured support, practical skills, and consistent check‑ins, many people cut down or stop using, feel better mentally and physically, and rebuild routines and relationships.

If you are noticing signs in yourself or someone you love, reaching out sooner helps.

Online Treatment for Drug Addiction FAQs

Who is HBR’s online drug addiction program for?

Anyone concerned about their own drug use OR a loved one’s. Whether you are noticing early signs or have struggled for years, we tailor support to where you are now.

How does HBR work?

We combine regular or flexible one‑to‑one coaching with evidence‑based content, all delivered online. You’ll have a dedicated coach or therapist throughout, plus structured aftercare if you choose Guided Path.

How am I matched to a coach or therapist?

After your intake assessment, we match you with a Canadian Certified Recovery Coach (CCRC) or licensed therapist whose experience aligns with your goals, substances involved, and preferred style of support.

Do you accept insurance?

We do not bill insurance directly. We can provide documentation if you wish to seek reimbursement through workplace benefits or private coverage.

Is online care safe if I have withdrawal risks?

Safety comes first. We screen for withdrawal risks and complexity at intake. If medical detox or in‑person care is safer, we will discuss options and referrals. HBR does not provide emergency services.

What are common risk factors for developing addiction?

Family history, trauma, chronic stress, anxiety or depression, ADHD, chronic pain, early exposure to substances, and social environments with heavy use are all common risk factors.

When should I seek help for drug use?

If drug use is affecting your relationships, work, health, finances, or sense of control, or if you have tried to cut back without success, reach out. You do not need to wait for a crisis before asking for support.
