How It Works
How We will Support You (and Your Loved One)

By Empowering You
When someone you care about is struggling – whether it is with their mental health, substance use, or both – it can feel like walking a tightrope.
You want to help, but you also need to look after yourself. That is where our HBR for Family Members program comes in.
We will work with you, step by step, to build your confidence and skills as a supporter. You will learn how to offer encouragement and guidance that really lands, without putting pressure on yourself to “fix” everything. Whether your loved one is facing anxiety, depression, alcohol use, or something else entirely, our approach is grounded in compassion and practical know-how.
It is not enough to just “be there” for your loved one. You need to be sure you have the tools and support you need to handle whatever comes your way.

By Clarifying Your Role
If you have ever wondered, “Am I doing enough?” or “Should I be doing something differently?” You are not alone. Knowing where you “fit” into your loved one’s journey can be confusing and sometimes overwhelming.
Our HBR for Family Members program helps you find clarity about your role, whether that means knowing when to step in, when to step back, or how to communicate boundaries with care. We will help you figure out what support looks like for your specific family situation. Maybe that means learning new ways to communicate when emotions run high, or maybe it is about understanding how your actions influence their recovery (and your own peace of mind).
We focus on sustainable, healthy boundaries. This is not just for your loved one’s benefit, but for yours too. Burnout is real; learning how and when to recharge is part of what we teach.

By Providing Useful Tools
Being there for someone with mental health or substance use challenges can take a toll on your own well-being. Do not be left guessing what might work. Our program gives you evidence-based strategies, real-world tips, and a safe place to ask questions.
You will get access to resources built by Canadian experts: from setting boundaries to managing difficult conversations, handling setbacks, and recognizing when to reach out for extra support. We also connect you with others who have walked a similar path through online groups and forums. Sometimes just hearing “me too” from someone else makes all the difference.
Our goal is simple: help you feel less alone, more empowered, and better equipped to support both your loved one and yourself through the ups and downs ahead.

Community Reinforcement and Family Training
Understanding the CRAFT Model in Addiction Recovery
What is CRAFT?
CRAFT is designed for families who want to support a loved one’s recovery from addiction or substance use—especially when that person is not ready to get help themselves. Unlike methods that rely on confrontation or “tough love,” CRAFT is all about building skills, improving communication, and using positive reinforcement.
- CRAFT is proven to work: Families using CRAFT are twice as likely to get their loved one into treatment compared to other approaches.
- With CRAFT there are no ultimatums or cutting off: You do not have to choose between helping your loved one and looking after yourself: CRAFT teaches you how to do both.
- CRAFT teaches the power of practical tools: The focus is on real, day-to-day strategies you can actually use, not just theory.
By learning these strategies, you can gently encourage healthier choices, increase the chances of your loved one seeking help, and improve life for everyone in the family (without needing to give ultimatums or step away).
In other words, CRAFT helps you support your loved one and look after your own wellbeing at the same time.
CRAFT in Action
Here is a simple example of the CRAFT model in action. Say that your partner drinks heavily most nights and gets defensive if you mention it. Using CRAFT, you might:
- Notice and reinforce positives: On a night when they skip drinking and join you for dinner, you acknowledge how much you enjoyed spending time together.
- Communicate effectively: Instead of blaming (“You are always drinking”), you use “I” statements (“I really appreciate evenings when we are able to talk and connect”).
- Set boundaries: You learn how to say no to enabling behaviours (like covering up for them at work) without starting a fight.
- Care for yourself: You build in time for your own hobbies or support groups, so you are not losing yourself in your loved one’s struggle.
CRAFT helps you gently guide your loved one toward healthier choices while making sure you stay healthy too.
Is CRAFT only used for addiction? No. While CRAFT was developed specifically for families supporting someone with substance use issues, its core principles can often help in other situations too, including mental health challenges.

Feel Understood and Supported
There is no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to supporting families. That is why we take care to pair you with the specialist on our team who is the best fit for your needs.
When you join HBR, we get to know your situation first. Then, based on your challenges and goals, we match you with the coach or therapist who offers the right approach and experience for you. This way, you get support that feels relevant and relatable, never generic.
We want you to feel understood and supported by someone who “gets it”, every step of the way.
